The first book on one of Leicester and Stamford’s favourite sons Daniel Lambert (1770-1809) was launched at Leicester Guildhall on 13th March 2019. The book is titled ‘The Daniel Lambert Picture Book’. The event was attended by the Lord Mayor of Leicester Councillor Ross Grant who made a short speech.
A toast to the memory of the great man, who shortly before his death weighed 52 stone 11 pounds, was made by the book’s author Roger Street, followed by a performance by local singer and songwriter Steve Cartwright of his ‘Ballad of Daniel Lambert’.
Following the book launch, The Daniel Lambert Society was formed.
The society aim is to honour the memory of the society’s hero and to promote this by initiating and supporting projects to achieve this aim. The principal projects are likely to be the erection of a statue in Leicester where he lived and a commemorative plaque on the building in Stamford where he died.
The rules of the society include its objective, membership, management and finance.
